When Khansa Tariq strides out onto the football pitch by her house in urban Pakistan with a football tucked under one arm, the Generation Amazing shirt she wears is symbolic of a transformation which has helped change her destiny and brought new sporting opportunities to her community. Seven years ago, this was just wasteland. Today she talks confidently about the power that football has to changes lives, and how she's witnessed it bring about social change in her community.
Assisted by implementing partners Right To Play and Mercy Corps, one of the most important impacts that Generation Amazing has had – in communities like Khansa's in Pakistan, Nepal, Jordan and Lebanon – is the unprecedented inclusion of girls. Their participation in the programme has transformed conventional gender roles and created opportunities for girls to develop life skills through football.
"Through football, I learned that no matter who you are, whether you are a boy or girl, you have a voice that can be heard," she said. "Playing football taught me that I can make a difference in my life. I would like to thank Generation Amazing for making us realise our potential."
Back on home ground in Qatar, Generation Amazing is working with the country's migrant workers and schoolchildren to develop their skills in areas such as inclusion, health and sustainability. Shamsher Singh, a construction worker, is one of those that has already benefited from the programme. He saw so much value in the programme that he went on to train to become a community coach, and volunteered to help the next cohort of Generation Amazing workers to achieve their aspirations.
"There are so many opportunities that Generation Amazing has provided us with," he said. "Through the support of my mentors, I now have the knowledge I need to be a leader and to adapt to challenges. There is no other feeling like helping people. For me, Generation Amazing is far more than just a football for development programme – it's been a life-changing experience during my time in Qatar."
In delivering the Generation Amazing programme to Qatar's youth and workers, as well as in the countries where these workers come from, the SC is helping to give back to the people that are helping to develop the country.
